Filing of tax returns in India

An income tax return is a form where taxpayers declare taxable income, deductions and tax payments for each financial year. Forms range from ITR 1 to ITR 7 depending on the type and nature of income.

Whether you are a resident Indian or an NRI, filing an income tax return is compulsory if your total Indian income exceeds Rs 2.5 lakh. Even below this threshold, filing is good practice.

Filing is especially important for NRIs to claim:

  • Refund of excess tax paid
  • Repatriation of funds from and to India
  • Gift of property or money
  • Purchase and sale of property in India
  • Availing house or personal loans in India
  • Financial credibility for VISA / higher education abroad
  • Tax credit in foreign country for taxes paid in India

You can file your returns on the Income Tax Department's website or with us at redbookindia.com. Keep PAN, Aadhar, address, bank details, income proofs, Section 80 deductions and TDS/advance-tax info ready.

Obtaining PAN Card

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Indian Income Tax Department. It is necessary for filing income tax returns and is also issued to foreign nationals — investors, business owners and HUFs.

For individuals & HUFs, proof of identity can include a passport, Voter's ID, PIO/OCI card, or attested national/taxpayer identification (Apostille / Indian Embassy attested).

Proof of address can include the above documents bearing the address, bank statements (foreign or NRE), Indian residence certificates, Foreigner's Registration Office certificate, or a visa + Indian-employer appointment letter and address certificate.

For entities, accepted documents include the country-of-registration certificate (Apostille or Indian-Embassy attested) or the Indian registration / approval to set up office.

Advisory on Tax Deducted at Source (TDS)

TDS collects tax at the source of income — the deductor remits tax on rent, commission, professional fees, salary, interest and similar payments, while the deductee gets credit via Form 26AS.

TDS deducted must be deposited by the 7th of the following month. TDS returns are quarterly — Form 24Q (salary), 27Q (non-resident payments), 26QB (property sale, 30 days), 26QC (rent, 30 days).

Certificates: Form 16 (annual, salary), 16A (quarterly, non-salary), 16B (property), 16C (rent). We support deductors and deductees end-to-end on TDS compliance, payments, returns and certificates.
